A giant step towards Paris (0-1)
In a win as impressive as those before at the Bernabeu and Stamford Bridge, FC Barcelona produced a magnificent display at the San Siro to beat AC Milan 1-0. The result leaves Barça with a fantastic chance of qualifying for the Champions League Final in Paris.
Way back in 1959, Barcelona won at the San Siro thanks to goals from Vergés and Suárez. Almost half a decade would pass before Barça could once again enjoy defeating the mighty Milan in their home ground, when Giuly struck home the winner in a convincing performance by the Blaugrana. It was a thoroughly deserved victory, and based on what we saw tonight, there are plenty of reasons to feel confident about Barcelona's chances of facing Arsenal or Villarreal in the final.
Barcelona had already enjoyed several chances before Giuly scored the only goal of the night in the 57th minute. After a workmanlike first half, Barcelona put on a tremendous exhibition of quality football in the second, inspired by Ronaldinho, who looked as impressive as ever. The whole team seemed perfectly focused for the big occasion, and made sure the game was played at the rhythm that suits them best. But although the one-goal advantage to take into the second leg inspires plenty of confidence, Milan also created plenty of danger, and that should serve as a warning that the job is still is only half done.
Respect and control
Both sides came out showing plenty of respect for each other, maybe even too much, and there were signs of early nerves. It was the visitors who took the initiative, controlling the flow of the ball in midfield, and maintaining most of the possession, though rarely producing anything to seriously trouble Milan keeper Dida. And then the Italian side suddenly came to life with two chances in the space of a minute: Gilardino, in the 14th, broke between Márquez and Oleguer only to see his shot hit the post, and moments later Valdés was called upon to block a dangerous Shevchenko header
Temperature rises
It was those two chances that lifted the tension, and from then on both teams started serving up a veritable footballing treat. After a frankly dull opening, the goalscoring opportunities started flowing thick and fast, with Eto'o, Ronaldinho and Giuly all coming close for Barça.
Milan also had their chances, especially a couple of free kicks taken by Kaká and Pirlo, but Barcelona were looking far more in control of the play. Ronaldinho started finding more freedom than he would have expected from the usually rock solid Milan defence, while Iniesta, Edmílson and Van Bommel were winning most of the midfield battles. Samuel Eto'o was as hungry as ever up front, and had his most clear cut opportunity on the stroke of half time, but his effort failed to hit the target.
Head to head
At half time, both managers, Rijkaard and Ancelotti, presumably ordered their players to play with more confidence and start taking the game to the opposition. The 'rossoneri' pulled their defensive lines back a few metres to create more space for counter attacks, but that only served to give Barcelona more room to play the ball around.
Iniesta was the main playmaker in the middle of the park, and Barcelona were often able to string together an amazing number of passes as Milan sat back and waited. But the home side was comfortable playing that way, and continually showed their uncanny knack for creating chances out of nothing. In the 50th minute Shevchenko, Kaká and Gilardino combined in a flash of brilliance, and the Italian really should have scored from point blank range.
Barça break the deadlock
That was the wake up call Barcelona needed, and a few minutes later Ronaldinho, faced by Gattuso a long way from goal, conjured up an absolutely breathtaking pass to Giuly, who struck a fantastic left-footed shot straight past a helpless Dida and into the back of the Milan net (0-1).
An away goal at this stage of the Champions League is a valuable asset, but Barcelona would come close to getting even more. In a threatening counter attack, Ronaldinho found himself on the edge of the Milan area and looked to have scored with a powerful strike, but the ball frustratingly bounced back into play off the far post.
Barça in control
Barcelona's morale was on a high, and there were moments when Milan seemed to have lost all control of what they were doing. Ancelotti made several changes in the hope of stirring his troops back into a game that was looking more and more like a lost cause. Iniesta and Eto'o had further chances to test the mettle of Milan keeper Dida, while a Ronaldinho free kick sailed narrowly over the bar. In the final minutes, Milan came forward with far more intensity than they had done for the bulk of the match, but it was desperate stuff. Ambrosini could have scored in the 80th minute, while Valdés produced his best intervention of the night to stop Maldini from grabbing a last minute equaliser. For Barcelona, this was a night to savour, and a trip to Paris in May is looking more likely than ever. But there is still the no small matter of the second leg in Barcelona to deal with first.
